Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, 70, has started serving a 27-year prison term after the Supreme Court upheld his conviction for plotting a coup against the elected government.
Bolsonaro had been under house arrest since August, but the court ordered his preventive detention amid concerns he might try to flee during a planned demonstration by his supporters near his residence in the capital.
The ruling follows a Supreme Court decision released on Tuesday confirming that the conviction is final and cannot be appealed. Four of the five justices voted to convict Bolsonaro for conspiring to overthrow his rival, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who defeated him in the 2022 presidential election.
