Pope Francis, head of the Vatican, departed Rome on Thursday for Turkey, marking his first official trip abroad since becoming pope in May.

The visit comes at the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Accompanying the pope are Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Minister of Relations Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, other officials, and more than 70 journalists.
