Heavy fighting has erupted in Sudan’s North Kordofan state between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, as the United Nations warned of a deepening humanitarian crisis and called for urgent aid for millions of displaced people.

A Sudanese army source said clashes took place around the Jabra al-Sheikh area, adding that army artillery units shelled positions held by the Rapid Support Forces.
