Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that any U.S. attempt to seize Greenland would mark the end of NATO, warning that such a move would undermine the alliance’s foundations based on respect for sovereignty.
Her remarks came in response to renewed calls by U.S. President Donald Trump for American control over the mineral-rich Arctic island, following a military operation in Venezuela over the weekend that heightened international tensions.
Frederiksen stressed that Greenland is an integral part of the Kingdom of Denmark and that any discussion of its future must take place within the framework of international law and respect for alliances within NATO.
