New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said on Friday that his government would not join the “Peace Council” founded by U.S. President Donald Trump, after reviewing the invitation “in its current form,” local media reported.
Luxon said the decision followed consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was approved by Foreign Minister Winston Peters, adding that officials concluded New Zealand’s participation would “add little value” to the body.
He said the council’s work would need to be consistent with the United Nations Charter and its principles.
Opposition Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins criticised the invitation as “ridiculous,” saying the idea that Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin could decide peace for another country while waging their own wars was unacceptable.
