Reports Say Russian Research Explores Using Neural-Enhanced Pigeons for Surveillance

Russian research is exploring an unconventional path in drone development by combining neural technology with living creatures, turning pigeons into what have been described as “biological drones” or cyborg organisms, Britain’s Telegraph newspaper reported.

According to the report, the approach involves implanting neural stimulation technology that allows birds to be guided and controlled to carry out complex surveillance missions, with the potential for future military applications.

The newspaper said the method is seen as a low-cost and highly discreet alternative to conventional drones, as birds are harder to detect and do not arouse suspicion.

There was no immediate comment from Russian authorities or research institutions on the report, and it remains unclear how advanced the work is or whether it has moved beyond the experimental stage.
