Unofficial results from Thailand’s early general election showed Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s Bhumjaithai Party winning the largest number of seats in parliament, though falling short of an outright majority, the Bangkok Post reported.
According to the newspaper, 94% of ballots had been counted following Sunday’s vote, which was held after the lower house was dissolved on Dec. 12.
Election Commission figures showed Bhumjaithai securing 194 seats, followed by the People’s Party with 116 seats and Pheu Thai with 76 seats.
With 251 seats needed to form a government, Bhumjaithai is expected to seek a coalition with the Kla Tham Party, which finished fourth in the election and was a partner in the previous governing coalition.
