U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday called for a pardon for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces corruption charges, criticising Israeli President Isaac Herzog for not granting one.
Speaking at an event at the White House, Trump praised Netanyahu’s performance during the war, describing it as a “great achievement,” and said the Israeli president “should be ashamed” for not issuing a pardon.
Trump said the Israeli public should press for such a move, calling the lack of a pardon “a disgrace.”
Netanyahu is facing corruption charges in cases before Israeli courts. The International Criminal Court has also issued an arrest warrant against him over allegations related to the war in Gaza, accusations Israel denies.
In response to Trump’s remarks, the Israeli president’s office said in a statement that a pardon request was “under review” and that Herzog would consider it “without any influence from external or internal pressures.”
The statement added that the request remains under examination at the justice ministry for a legal opinion, after which the president will review it.
