55 Killed, Including 25 Security Forces, in Mexico Violence After Drug Lord’s Death

Mexican authorities said 55 people, including 25 security personnel, were killed in a wave of violence that erupted after the federal forces killed drug trafficker Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.”

Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch told reporters on Monday that violence spread to 16 states following the death of the leader of the Jalisco New Generation cartel.

He said 25 security officers were killed in attacks by drug gangs, while 30 cartel members were killed during security operations.

Authorities closed 85 roads in 11 states as a precautionary measure, Harfuch added, saying traffic on major highways had since returned to normal due to the deployment of security forces.

Separately, around 1,000 tourists were stranded while heading to the zoo in Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco state in western Mexico and one of the host cities for the 2026 World Cup, authorities said.
