Iran’s Defense Council warned that any attack on its coasts or islands would lead to disruption of shipping lanes and communications in the Gulf, as well as the deployment of naval mines.
The warning comes amid reports that the US administration may move to impose a naval blockade or take control of Kharg Island, in an effort to pressure Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump has given Iran a 48-hour deadline to reopen the strait, threatening to target energy facilities if it fails to comply.
Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) vowed to retaliate in kind against any attacks on Iran’s energy sector, saying it is prepared to strike power plants in Israel as well as facilities supplying electricity to US bases in the region.
