South Korea Scrambles Fighter Jets After Chinese and Russian Warplanes Enter Air Defense Zone

South Korea announced on Saturday that it scrambled fighter jets after more than ten Chinese and Russian military aircraft entered its Air Defense Identification Zone as a precautionary measure.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff said the aircraft entered and later exited the Korea Air Defense Identification Zone over the East Sea and the South Sea without violating South Korean airspace.

Military officials stated that the aircraft were detected before entering the zone, prompting the deployment of Air Force fighters in preparation for any potential contingency.

Authorities emphasized that an Air Defense Identification Zone is not sovereign airspace but a buffer area where military aircraft are generally expected to notify the relevant country before entry, although such notification is not legally required.
