Indonesian authorities have evacuated 3,000 people after the eruption of Mount Ibo volcano on the remote island of Halmahera in North Maluku province, following a high alert issued by the Indonesian Geological Survey.
A total of 517 residents of the village closest to the volcano have been evacuated to shelters, with more expected to follow.
Authorities also urged residents and tourists to avoid the five- to six-kilometre exclusion zone around the volcano’s summit and to wear masks in case of ash fall.
