Brazilian human rights minister sacked after sexual harassment allegations

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sacked his Human Rights Minister, Silvio Almeida, on Friday after several women accused him of sexual harassment.

The presidency said in a statement that Lula decided to dismiss the human rights minister after he was ‘summoned to a meeting at the Planalto Palace in light of serious allegations’ against him.
The statement added: ‘The president considers it unacceptable for the minister to remain in office.
The scandal began on Thursday evening when the Metropolis website revealed that the ‘Me Too Brazil’ movement had received complaints from a number of women accusing Silvio Almeida of sexual harassment.
