China on Friday completed the main structure of what is expected to be the world’s tallest bridge in the southwestern province of Guizhou.
The last steel girder, weighing about 215 tonnes, was lifted into place this afternoon, joining parts of the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, which is still under construction. The vertical height of this suspension bridge is 625 metres from the bridge deck to the river surface, almost twice the height of the Eiffel Tower.
The bridge is 2,890 metres long, with a main span of 1,420 metres, making it the largest span in a mountainous area in the world.
