At least 80 people were killed and 20 injured in attacks by guerrilla groups in Colombia over the weekend, local authorities said on Sunday.
Local media reported that the victims were killed in attacks by fighters from the National Liberation Army (ELN) and in clashes with defectors from the disbanded Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in the Catatumbo region.
The ombudsman’s office said the victims included seven signatories to peace agreements signed some 10 years ago, as well as community leader Carmelo Guerrero.
Thousands were forced to flee, while families were forced to stay in their homes, it added.
Many people, including peace agreement signatories, community leaders, their families and even children, are at particular risk of being kidnapped or killed … many of whom have not yet been rescued and are fleeing to seek refuge in the mountains,’ the agency said.
The clashes have led to the suspension of classes and disruption of daily activities, with food shortages reported.
