5 magnitude earthquake hits Peru

An earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale struck the coastal region of Ica in central Peru on Tuesday.

According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the quake struck at a depth of 18 kilometres, 74 kilometres south-west of the city of Ica.

Peru experiences more than 400 earthquakes a year, which are felt by the population due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for seismic activity along the western coast of South America.
