WHO Implements Emergency Measures Following US Withdrawal Plan

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has implemented emergency measures including a hiring freeze and a ban on non-essential travel for its approximately 8,000 staff, in response to Trump’s administration plan to withdraw from the organization.

During an emergency session, Ghebreyesus expressed hopes for discounts on renegotiated contracts.

Notably, the U.S. covered about 20% of the organization’s budget, with no clear funding source to replace it. The official withdrawal is set to take effect on January 22, 2026.
