Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has issued a constitutional decree stipulating that the deputy chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Executive Committee will assume the duties of president in the event of a vacancy.

Hussein al-Sheikh currently holds the position, making him the most likely interim successor should Abbas become unable to serve.

The move comes amid internal debate over succession arrangements and the continuity of Palestinian institutions in a politically complex environment.
