Afghanistan: 56 Civilians Killed in Escalating Border Clashes with Pakistan

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, announced that 56 civilians — including 24 children and six women — have been killed since border clashes between Afghan forces and the Pakistani army escalated over the past week.

The fighting has been ongoing since Feb. 26, after Afghan forces launched an attack in response to Pakistani airstrikes inside Afghan territory.

The escalation was followed by retaliatory strikes and shelling targeting several locations, including Bagram Air Base as well as areas in Kabul and Kandahar.

The clashes have also left 129 people wounded and forced the displacement of around 115,000 Afghans and about 3,000 people in Pakistan.
