The Afghan government announced on Tuesday that the death toll from the devastating earthquake in Kunar province, northeast Afghanistan, has risen to around 1,000, with the number expected to increase due to difficulties in reaching survivors in remote mountainous areas where roads were severely damaged.
Kabul has officially requested assistance from Russia to help deal with the aftermath of the disaster. The quake’s tremors were also felt in neighboring Pakistan, deepening the humanitarian crisis already exacerbated by severe flooding there.
This earthquake is among the deadliest natural disasters Afghanistan has faced in recent years, leaving widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure as rescue efforts continue under extremely challenging conditions.
