Afghanistan Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 622, Over 1,500 Injured

The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar province on Sunday evening has climbed to 622, with at least 1,555 others injured, the Interior Ministry confirmed on Monday.

Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Matin Qani told reporters that 610 of the victims were from Kunar province, while 12 others were killed in neighboring Nangarhar.

Earlier on Monday, the Ministry of Information had reported more than 250 deaths and 500 injuries before the figures were revised upward.

The 6.0-magnitude quake destroyed numerous homes, leaving widespread devastation in affected areas.

Qani added that Acting Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani has instructed local authorities to expedite the delivery of aid to the hardest-hit communities.
