The death toll from Tuesday’s earthquake in Afghanistan has risen above 2,200, with more than 3,600 injured, the Taliban government reported Thursday, as rescue operations continue in the affected regions.
Deputy government spokesman Hamdullah Fetrat stated that in Kunar province alone, 2,205 people have died and 3,640 were injured. He noted that emergency teams are still struggling to reach remote areas due to landslides and blocked roads.
The 5.5-magnitude quake triggered rockfalls and widespread infrastructure damage, collapsing over 6,700 homes. The United Nations has warned that the death toll could rise further, as many people remain trapped under rubble, complicating rescue and recovery efforts.
