Afghanistan Says It Downed Pakistani Fighter Jet, Captured Pilot; Pakistan Denies

Two powerful explosions shook the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad on Saturday, a day after Pakistani strikes targeted Kabul and other major Afghan cities.

Residents reported hearing the roar of a jet followed by two blasts near Jalalabad airport, the capital of Nangarhar province on the highway linking Kabul to the Pakistani border, Agence France-Presse reported.

Afghan police and armed forces said a Pakistani fighter jet had crashed in the city and that its pilot was captured alive.

“A Pakistani fighter jet was shot down in the sixth district of Jalalabad city, and its pilot was captured alive,” police spokesperson Tayeb Hamad said.

Wahidullah Mohammadi, an army spokesperson in eastern Afghanistan, said Afghan forces had downed the Pakistani aircraft and detained the pilot.

Residents said the pilot parachuted from the aircraft before being captured.

Pakistan denied the Afghan military’s claim that one of its military aircraft had crashed.
