President Alassane Ouattara has been re-elected for a fourth term in Côte d’Ivoire in an election characterized by low voter turnout and cautious calm, despite at least ten fatalities in scattered incidents of violence. Opposition parties had called for a boycott, describing the vote as a “blow to democracy.”
The head of the electoral commission, Ibrahim Coulibaly, said Ouattara, 83, who first took office in 2011, received 89.7% of the votes according to preliminary results, which await official validation by the Constitutional Council in early November.
