The city council of the Dutch capital Amsterdam on Wednesday approved a motion declaring that sports clubs from countries contributing to occupation or racist policies are not welcome in the city, with a particular reference to Israeli clubs.
The motion, introduced by Shihab Khan, head of the DENK party group in the council, passed with a large majority of 42 votes in favor against 9 opposed. The decision will now be referred to sports authorities and the Royal Dutch Football Association for implementation.
According to the motion, clubs established in illegal settlements, those that directly or indirectly support the continuation of occupation, or those that tolerate racist and extremist behavior among their fans, are deemed unwelcome in Amsterdam.
The text of the decision cited UN reports accusing Israel of committing grave violations in Gaza and turning the territory into an “open-air prison,” as well as rulings by the International Court of Justice. It also pointed to Israeli clubs such as Beitar Jerusalem and Maccabi Tel Aviv, known for anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian stances and racist practices.
