Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they had struck a U.S. destroyer in the Indian Ocean with missiles, causing damage and a fire aboard the vessel, according to a statement carried by the semi-official Fars news agency early on Wednesday.
The statement said the destroyer was refueling from a U.S. tanker about 650 km (400 miles) off Iran’s coast in the Indian Ocean when it was targeted.
The Guards said the vessel was hit by “Qader 380” and “Talaiyeh” missiles and that a large fire broke out on the decks of the two ships.
There was no immediate comment from U.S. officials on the claim as of 0650 GMT, and the report could not be independently verified.
Since Saturday, Israel and the United States have carried out military strikes on Iran, while Tehran has responded by launching missiles and drones toward Israel and what it describes as U.S. bases in the region.
