At least 15 people were killed and 16 others remain missing after heavy rains triggered landslides in India’s Himalayan state of Uttarakhand on Tuesday, Indian media reported Wednesday.

The disaster struck several areas of the mountainous state, where rescue teams continue to search for the missing. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise as operations progress.

Uttarakhand has been prone to frequent floods and landslides during the monsoon season. In August, flash floods and mudslides swept through the village of Darali, leaving more than 60 people unaccounted for, according to local officials.
