Brazil Rejects Trump’s Tariff Threats, Urges Negotiated Trade Solution with U.S.

Brazil has formally expressed its “deep concern” over recent threats by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose tariffs of up to 50% on Brazilian imports, following U.S. accusations of “unfair trade practices” and alleged political persecution of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

In a letter sent Wednesday to U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Brazil reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue and urged Washington to seek a negotiated solution to the escalating trade dispute.

“Brazil remains willing to engage in dialogue with U.S. authorities and negotiate a mutually acceptable resolution on bilateral trade matters,” read the statement signed by Vice President and Minister of Industry and Trade Geraldo Alckmin, along with Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira.

Last week, President Trump announced punitive tariffs targeting Brazilian exports, despite the fact that the trade balance remains significantly in favor of the United States. He accused Brazil of conducting a “campaign of political harassment” against Bolsonaro, his far-right ally.
