The Brazilian government said on Saturday that U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to lower tariffs on certain products, including coffee, represents “a step in the right direction,” expressing hope for further gains in ongoing negotiations.
Despite Trump’s announcement on Friday of a 10% reduction in tariffs on some agricultural goods imposed since April, Brazil continues to face punitive duties of 40% on a significant portion of its exports to the United States.
Under the current measures, coffee and beef exports are taxed at 40%, down from 50% in August. Brazil remains the world’s largest producer and exporter of both commodities.
