Brazil’s Supreme Court Sentences Bolsonaro to 27 Years for Coup Plot

Brazil’s Supreme Court on Thursday sentenced former President Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison after convicting him of plotting a coup to oust his rival Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva following the 2022 election, according to AFP.

The 70-year-old ex-leader was found guilty after four of the five justices voted in favor of conviction, making him the first former president in Brazil’s history to be sentenced for conspiring against democracy.

Prosecutors alleged that Bolsonaro’s plan went beyond seeking to cling to power, outlining a plot that included the assassination of Lula before his inauguration, as well as the killing of Justice Alexandre de Moraes, a key Supreme Court member.
