Brazil’s Supreme Court Vows to Proceed With Bolsonaro Trial Despite U.S. Sanctions and Pressure

Brazil’s Supreme Court reaffirmed its commitment to proceed with the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro, dismissing mounting external pressure and recent U.S. sanctions.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes, a key figure in the proceedings, declared on Friday that the court “will not yield to foreign sanctions or political pressure.” While he did not mention the United States or its leadership directly, his remarks come amid escalating diplomatic tensions between Brasília and Washington.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Justice de Moraes over alleged suppression of free speech. Additionally, former U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods, further straining relations.

Bolsonaro faces charges of conspiring to retain power after his defeat in the 2022 presidential election. His trial is expected to commence later this year.
