CAF: “Africa Cup of Nations to Shift to Every 4 Years Instead of 2”

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced during its executive meeting in Rabat on Saturday that the Africa Cup of Nations will move to every four years after the 2028 edition, avoiding clashes with other international tournaments.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the change is part of a comprehensive restructuring of African soccer “to ensure a more harmonious global football calendar.”

The 35th edition kicks off tomorrow in Morocco, with the 36th in 2027 hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda in summer to minimize club conflicts; the next follows in 2028.

Motsepe also unveiled a new annual “African Nations League” modeled on Europe’s, starting in 2029.

The tournament has run biennially since its 1957 debut; this will be Morocco’s eighth hosting in 15 years, following the 2012 edition in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
