Cameroonian President Paul Biya announced on Monday that he will run for an eighth term in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for October 12.
Biya, who first assumed power in 1982 following the resignation of former president Ahmadou Ahidjo, is currently the world’s oldest sitting head of state. His presidency has spanned over four decades, making him one of the longest-serving leaders globally.
The announcement comes amid growing domestic and international calls for democratic reforms and political renewal in Cameroon, where opposition voices have repeatedly demanded term limits and fair electoral processes.
