President Faustin-Archange Touadéra of the Central African Republic officially declared his candidacy for a third term on Saturday, taking advantage of a 2023 constitutional amendment that removed presidential term limits.
Speaking at a rally of his ruling party, the United Hearts Movement, in the capital Bangui, the 68-year-old leader said, “Many of you have asked me the question, and my answer is: yes. I am your candidate for the December 2025 presidential election.” He pledged to continue efforts to rebuild the country.
Touadéra has been in office since 2016 and has relied on support from foreign forces to maintain control amid ongoing internal conflict. His announcement comes amid rising political tensions and concerns from opposition parties over the consolidation of power.
