China said on Monday it would conduct large-scale military exercises around Taiwan, including live-fire drills near the self-governed island, prompting condemnation from Taipei, which said the move challenged international law and order.
Beijing said the drills would take place on Tuesday in five maritime and air zones near Taiwan, an island China claims as its own.
Taiwan criticised the exercises as a military escalation that threatens regional stability and undermines security in the Taiwan Strait.
