China Begins Construction of Two New Nuclear Units in Southern Coastal City

China has officially commenced construction on two new nuclear power units utilizing the country’s third-generation “Hualong One” technology in the coastal city of Fangchenggang, Guangxi province. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Friday, marking a significant step in China’s long-term energy strategy to reduce carbon emissions and strengthen its nuclear energy capabilities.

Developed by the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), the Hualong One reactors are a symbol of China’s progress in homegrown nuclear innovation. These new units are designed with enhanced safety features and improved efficiency, capable of producing approximately 1,200 megawatts each. Once operational, they are expected to supply electricity to millions of households in southern China.

This move is part of Beijing’s broader efforts to expand clean energy production and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, in line with the country’s carbon neutrality goals set for 2060. China currently operates more than 50 nuclear reactors and has over 20 under construction, making it one of the world’s leading nations in nuclear development.
