Preliminary data from Germany’s Federal Statistical Office indicate that China has reclaimed its position as Germany’s largest trading partner during the first eight months of 2025, surpassing the United States amid rising U.S. tariffs on German exports.
According to calculations by Reuters, trade between Germany and China totaled €163.4 billion ($190.7 billion) from January through August, slightly ahead of trade with the United States, which stood at €162.8 billion over the same period.
The U.S. had been Germany’s leading trading partner in 2024, but escalating trade tensions and tariffs appear to have contributed to China regaining the top spot in 2025.
