China on Wednesday ruled out joining nuclear disarmament talks with the United States and Russia, calling expectations of its participation “illogical and unrealistic.”
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Beijing would not enter trilateral negotiations, citing the vast disparity between China’s limited arsenal and the massive stockpiles held by Washington and Moscow, which together possess about 90 percent of the world’s nuclear weapons.
The remarks followed comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who told reporters Monday at the White House that nuclear disarmament was a “very big goal,” adding that Russia was ready and he believed China “would be ready too.”
The Chinese stance comes amid heightened concerns after Moscow withdrew in 2023 from the last remaining arms control treaty with Washington, raising fears of a renewed nuclear arms race.
