China Summons Japanese Ambassador Over New Prime Minister’s Remarks on Taiwan

China has summoned Japan’s ambassador in Beijing over remarks made by the newly appointed Japanese prime minister concerning Taiwan, state news agency Xinhua reported on Friday.

According to the report, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong summoned Ambassador Kenji Kanasugi on Thursday to lodge a “strong protest” over what Beijing described as “erroneous” comments about China.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated last week that an armed attack on Taiwan could justify Japan sending forces to support the island under the framework of “collective self-defense.
