China warned its citizens on Monday, January 26, 2026, against traveling to Japan during the Lunar New Year holiday, the country’s longest official break, amid ongoing tensions between Beijing and Tokyo over remarks related to Taiwan.
In a statement, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Chinese nationals “face serious security threats in Japan,” citing a “significant increase in crimes targeting Chinese people,” as well as the risk of earthquakes.
The warning comes as there are no signs of easing anger in Beijing over comments made in early November by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who said that any Chinese attack on democratic Taiwan could trigger a military response from Tokyo.
Following those remarks, China issued similar warnings and responded by imposing export restrictions, canceling flights, and launching sharp criticism through state media.
