The death toll from a cholera outbreak in Sudan’s Darfur region has risen to 149, according to the General Coordination of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). The organization warned of a rapidly worsening health crisis, particularly in displacement camps.
Adam Regal, spokesperson for the coordination body, reported that 3,547 cholera cases have been confirmed so far. He noted that the outbreak is spreading alarmingly in areas such as Tawila, Jebel Marra, and Nyala, where health services remain severely inadequate.
The health emergency coincides with Sudan’s ongoing civil conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The war has killed over 20,000 people and displaced approximately 15 million, according to the United Nations and local authorities.
