The Colombian army announced Sunday that it had managed to free 27 soldiers who had been held in San Juan de Micay, southwestern Colombia, while 45 others remain in captivity by rebel fighters controlling the area, a key cocaine production hub.

The army explained that the soldiers were captured after about 600 residents surrounded them during a military operation.
