At least 19 people died and 82 were rescued after a boat capsized on Lake Mai-Ndombe in western Democratic Republic of Congo, highlighting the country’s fragile river transport and frequent deadly accidents.
The incident occurred late on Thursday night when the boat departed from the village of Kiri heading to the capital, Kinshasa, before being overturned by strong waves amid high winds that disabled one of its engines.
Local officials said the boat was carrying around 200 passengers, far exceeding its capacity, and the number of people still missing remains unknown.
