Death Toll Rises to 279 in India Air India Plane Crash

The death toll from the crash of an Air India passenger plane has risen to 279, authorities confirmed on Saturday. The aircraft went down shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad Airport in northwest India, en route to London.

A local police official stated that “279 bodies have been recovered and transferred to the city hospital,” marking the incident as one of the deadliest air disasters in modern Indian history.

Earlier reports had put the number of fatalities at 265, including passengers, crew members, and local residents near the crash site.

According to the Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the plane crashed on Thursday less than a minute after takeoff. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the accident.
