Voters in Ecuador have rejected a proposal to reopen U.S. military bases in the country, according to preliminary results from a national referendum held on Sunday. The proposal was one of several constitutional and political amendments presented to the public.
With nearly 75% of ballots counted, early results show that about 60% of voters said “no” to lifting the long-standing ban on foreign military bases in Ecuador.
The rejection blocks any possibility of the U.S. military returning to the coastal Manta air base, which Washington previously used for counter-narcotics operations before its closure in 2009.
The outcome represents a significant political setback for Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, one of Washington’s closest allies in Latin America and a known associate of U.S. President Donald Trump.
