Ecuadorians Reject Foreign Military Bases

Ecuadorians on Sunday voted against a proposal that would have allowed foreign countries to operate military bases in the South American nation, which is grappling with drug gangs that extort communities, kill politicians, and fight over territory.

Voters also rejected another proposal in the four-part referendum, which asked whether to launch a process that could lead to a new constitution, with six out of ten voters saying “no.”

The referendum outcome marks a major setback for President Daniel Noboa, a conservative closely aligned with former U.S. President Donald Trump, who had pressured Ecuadorian courts to include the question on rewriting the constitution.
