Egypt’s Sisi Warns of Serious Fallout from Iran Escalation, Urges Dialogue

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi warned on Friday of “serious repercussions” for the Middle East stemming from rising tensions with Iran, saying Cairo is making intensive efforts to promote dialogue and de-escalation.

Speaking during a visit to the Police Academy east of Cairo, Sisi said in a statement issued by the presidency that “the Iranian crisis is escalating and could have an impact on the region.”

“We are calling for and exerting great efforts, calmly, to reach dialogue in any way possible to reduce escalation over the Iranian crisis,” he said.

Sisi added that Egypt fears the crisis could have “very serious consequences” for the region if fighting breaks out, including significant economic repercussions.

His remarks came a day after U.S. President Donald Trump renewed threats of an imminent military strike on Iran, saying “very large and powerful” U.S. naval vessels were currently heading toward the country.
