El Salvador Parliament Approves Constitutional Reform Extending Presidential

El Salvador’s parliament on Thursday approved a constitutional amendment that eliminates the cap on presidential terms, allowing presidents to seek re-election indefinitely.

The amendment, passed in an expedited session by a majority of 57 lawmakers out of 60, also extends the presidential term from five to six years. According to AFP, the reform abolishes the country’s second-round presidential run-off as well.

The move comes just months after President Nayib Bukele secured a second term in office in February 2024, winning over 85% of the vote. The new amendment clears the way for him and future presidents to remain in power without term limits, sparking concerns among observers about democratic backsliding in the Central American nation.

Critics warn that the concentration of power in the executive branch could undermine institutional checks and balances, while Bukele’s supporters argue the changes reflect the will of the people.
