A new Escalation: Putin Signs Law to Withdraw Russia’s Ratification of Nuclear Test Ban Treaty

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on Thursday to revoke Russia’s ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. This move comes in the context of the conflict in Ukraine and tensions with the West.

The treaty, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1996, aims to prevent all nuclear tests. However, it has not been enforced due to the non-participation of key nuclear-armed states, notably the United States and China.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said last month that Moscow would continue to respect the ban and will only resume nuclear tests if Washington does first.
