On Sunday, March 31, millions of Turkish citizens will be going to the polls to cast their ballots in the country’s municipal elections. Istanbul is the largest city where candidates will compete for the role of mayor of the metropolitan municipality, according to a map of the most significant municipalities that participated in the election.
There were 49 contenders in total, consisting of 27 independents and 22 members of political parties.
There will be 29 contenders for the Gaziantep municipality mayoralty, 26 of whom are from political parties and 3 of whom are independents.
There will be 28 contenders running for the Malatya municipality; 23 will represent political parties and 5 will run as independents.
Ankara’s mayoral elections will include 24 candidates, 19 of whom are affiliated with political parties and 5 of whom are independents. In addition, Izmir will have 27 people running for mayor: 6 independents and 21 members of major parties.
